Psychological safety is not the absence of demands
Psychological safety is not the absence of demands. It is about making people safe enough to contribute fully — with clarity, respect and responsibility both ways.

Psychological safety is sometimes portrayed as if it is about making working life softer, less direct or less demanding.
I think that is a misunderstanding.
In performance environments, and especially in commercial environments, there should still be:
• expectations
• demands for effort
• clear goals
• responsibility for deliveries
That is not the problem.
The problem arises when high demands are combined with low respect, unclear communication or a culture where people do not dare speak up, ask questions or report risk early enough.
Then you do not get more performance. You get more silence, poorer information and weaker learning.
For me, psychological safety is therefore not about lowering demands. It is about making people safe enough to contribute fully.
And that responsibility goes both ways. 💥
The leader has a particular responsibility to set direction, be clear, follow up, correct with respect and create frameworks that make it possible to contribute.
But employees also have a responsibility:
• to show up prepared
• to take ownership
• to contribute constructively
• to speak up when something is unclear
• to stand in demands, feedback and expectations
Safety does not mean a right to be passive. It means safety to be active.
That is an important difference.
The best performance environments are therefore not the most comfortable. They are the safest for thinking aloud, challenging, learning, adjusting and delivering under pressure. 📈
I also believe this is one of the most underestimated connections in leadership:
High demands are best tolerated where respect is high. 💯
When people experience clarity, respect and predictability, they also tolerate more pressure, more correction and higher expectations. Not because demands become lower, but because the framework becomes better. ⚖️
Perhaps that is why psychological safety is not primarily a wellbeing topic.
It is a topic about quality, responsibility and execution in the pursuit of goals. 🎯
